enCapsa - Uniting the World's Data

Frequently Asked Questions.

What is enCapsa?

enCapsa is a new way of combining, managing and sharing different types of information. It allows data from two or more tables or files to be merged without having to worry about their structure or to do anything to the data first.

What can enCapsa do for you?

enCapsa lets you combine data, documents and images. With enCapsa you can quickly merge different types of data to get meaningful insights into different types of information without the hassle of having to map, scrub or massage it first.

What is enCapsulation?

enCapsulation is the process of breaking two or more data tables in to smaller elements called Digital Stems CellsTM or DSCsTM for short, so that they can be searched like one table.

Why enCapsulate a data table or file?

Because searching different data tables which are often structurally different is hard, you need a way to combine them so that they can be stored and searched more easily. enCapsulation allows data from different files to exist in the same space so that they can be searched easily without having to worry about their different structures.

Why is structure a problem?

Combining two or more data tables is messy. For tables to be combined you have to know each table’s structure or schema so that you can know what field in one table corresponds to the same or similar field in the other. This is called mapping and it is what allows us to do searches across different data tables. However, mapping, as a process is time consuming and tedious.

How does enCapsulation solve this problem?

enCapsulation breaks data table records down to elemental units called DSCsTM so that records from different tables or files become essentially the same. enCapsulation makes structure unimportant in any search or analysis of combined data tables because you are searching these smaller elements which are structurally the same and not the whole table which might not. With enCapsa there is no need to map or scrub the data first.

Why is enCapsulation easier?

With enCapsa you simply drag a data table from your desktop and drop it in a special area on the Web page and it is quickly merged with other tables in your enCapsa store. That’s it. No need to map. No need to scrub. No need to diagram. Just drag and drop and instantly it is available to be searched and analyzed.

How does one “drop” a database into enCapsa?

In the context of enCapsa, databases are a synonymous with a data table. It is a data table in the form of a CSV file or remote connection to a SQL or similar data table that is imported or “dropped” into enCapsa. You can quite literarily drag a “CSV” or other file from your desktop onto the enCapsa Website to be “enCapsulated.” enCapsulation is a way of breaking two or more data tables or files into smaller more elemental parts to the point that their size negates the differences between them. This process allows us to import or “drop” a data table into our store and have it coexist nicely with another data table even though both may have quite different structures. Now both data tables can be searched for the name “Smith” even though they may each have defined it differently (i.e. last name = Smith in one, surname = Smith in another.)

Does enCapsa only deal with data tables?

No. enCapsa also allows you to add documents, spreadsheets, PDFs and images. In each of these instances enCapsa extracts and encapsulates not just the text of the document or file but also the metadata attached to the file.

Is enCapsa intended to replace existing data stores?

enCapsa is not a database or data table per se, but a means of storing information from multiple data tables, so that differences between tables, are irrelevant. These enCapsa stores can be in traditional databases, they can sit beside production databases with constantly updated content or they can also exist as stand-alone systems in their own right.

How does enCapsa support varying data formats?

This is the power of enCapsulation. With the help of a parser, enCapsa reduces data, documents and files to certain elemental parts, we call DSCsTM, that can be searched and analyzed as though they were in one table. enCapsa has built in parsers for the more common file types (csv, docx, pdf, png, jpg, txt, etc.) New parsers are being added all the time. enCapsa can connect directly to remote SQL databases.

So how does enCapsa help you analyze data?

By breaking down data tables to these elemental units you can easily analyze pure search results in a fraction of the time it would take otherwise. For example, in an enCapsa store of several employee of human resource related data tables you can easily find out in which cities people live by simply employing a search query for example: "all the people who work for the Acme Food company," and then selecting cities as your analytical or graphing field. encapsa will show you the distribution of cities even though the data might have come from many differently structured tables or documents.

How does enCapsa enable searches?

enCapsa uses one of the most powerful search engines on the planet this allows you to perform quite rapid and sophisticated searches of vast amounts of information. Once enCapsulated, you can perform powerful searches across multiple data tables without having to do anything to the data first.

How secure is enCapsa?

enCapsa’s ability to hide relationships between sensitive data elements provides the necessary security to meet data security requirements, as confirmed by Mr. John Parmigiani, (retired) Director of Enterprise Standards, U.S. Healthcare Finance Administration (he literally wrote the HIPAA data security standard). enCapsa meets the requirements as set for in: HIPAA, 42CFR Part 2, 21CFR Part 11, SOX, PCI, GLBA, FISMA, ISO 17799-2005, BASEL.
